I did the contours with 4B Wolff pencil (carbon), and was surprised the watercolor didn't dissolve it. Added a bit of ink to define the leaves.

I love the feel of how the Wolff carbon pencil flows on newsprint. A rare combo because most people don't buy actual newspapers anymore.

Before I did a long (2 hour) charcoal, I did two presketches, one in colored pencil, one in pen (w/c added later).

They help me see what I'm looking at.

I like how these pencils dissolve in washes. The paper has a suede feel, which complemented the bear image.

Other paper would have a very different effect--to be researched.

Practice trying to catch a chrome shine with white. Should have been on gray paper, to be more accurate, but since when was that ever my goal?

I paused the "An Afternoon with Nancy" DVD and drew the hands of Richard Schmid and Nancy Guzito.

 The list is the colors on Nancy's palette and the oil medium recipe that Richard uses.

Standing, draw fast! The key is to catch the shapes and relative tones quickly, adding texture later.
