a doodle, a face, a shoe

Filling a page. I did the face from imagination and the premarked lines on the paper turned into a scar in just the right place.

a doodle and a face

I didn't have to pause the video. In Danny Gregory's interviews of the people in his book, An Illustrated Journey, each person faces the camera for so long as they listen and talk, they move very little.

Great book, great interviews about each person's process and gear. And this new doodle that I'm fascinated with making.

that mask again

Pasted onto a journal page with a copy of a sketch by James Thurber. Seemed like a good pairing.

that's just a model, not me

Don't cringe, just draw what's (unfortunately) there.

mixed media and audio books

Idly filling a journal page while I listen to an audio book. Colored pencil for the watch, gel pen and w/c for the bear.

hands in blue gel

Sometimes I really love the color that emerges from the changing gel pens, but it never lasts.

sneakers, trainers, runners?

What's the latest term for athletic shoes?

Putting this away until October. End of the burning season.

wolff pencil and watercolor

I did the contours with 4B Wolff pencil (carbon), and was surprised the watercolor didn't dissolve it. Added a bit of ink to define the leaves.

Wolff pencil on newspaper

I love the feel of how the Wolff carbon pencil flows on newsprint. A rare combo because most people don't buy actual newspapers anymore.

pre-sketching

Before I did a long (2 hour) charcoal, I did two presketches, one in colored pencil, one in pen (w/c added later).

They help me see what I'm looking at.

Faber Castell watersoluble graphite

I like how these pencils dissolve in washes. The paper has a suede feel, which complemented the bear image.

Other paper would have a very different effect--to be researched.

that chrome shine

Practice trying to catch a chrome shine with white. Should have been on gray paper, to be more accurate, but since when was that ever my goal?

page filler

At the bottom of a journal page, because it was in front of me.

artists' hands

I paused the "An Afternoon with Nancy" DVD and drew the hands of Richard Schmid and Nancy Guzito.

The list is the colors on Nancy's palette and the oil medium recipe that Richard uses.

One hand in changing color gel, one in permanent tech pen, in the Paper Blanks journal.

drawing from Cute Overload

Always a lot of cuteness there to practice on!

Pen and bright watercolor, from an old Pelikan palette, to brighten the journal.

Les Mis again. Not a lot of laughs.

Focused on the struggles in Les Mis.

aerial view of the cat

Standing, draw fast! The key is to catch the shapes and relative tones quickly, adding texture later.

Just after I got his body in, he (of course) completely turned and curled in a new way.
